This Black Sponge-Wrapped Air Filter Element is a two-stage filter in one body. The outer layer is a black polyurethane sponge—open-cell, oil-resistant, and washable. Its job is to stop bugs, leaves, sand, and other large particles before they ever reach the inner filter. The inner element is a high-density pleated paper or non-woven media that catches the fine dust that the sponge lets through. When the sponge gets dirty, you pull it off, wash it, dry it, and put it back. The inner element lasts much longer because the sponge takes the abuse.

Q: Can I wash just the sponge, or the whole filter?

A: Wash only the black sponge outer layer. Remove it carefully from the inner element. The inner pleated paper should never get wet—it will swell, harden, and lose efficiency. If the inner element is dirty, replace it.

Q: How do I wash the sponge correctly?

A: Remove sponge. Rinse under warm tap water (not hot) to remove loose dirt. Soak in mild detergent solution for 10 minutes. Gently squeeze (don’t twist or wring). Rinse until water runs clear. Pat dry with a towel. Air dry completely before reinstalling. Never use compressed air to blow-dry—it will tear the foam.

Q: Does the black sponge catch oil?
